As originally promised R.A.F. Cranage was only used as an operational airfield for the duration of the war, but while the airfield was slowly returned to the farmers, the main camp site remained in use through to 1957/8 as a training ground for National Service personnel, as temporary homes for personnel and families travelling around the world and as a base for the U.S. Army Engineers.
